The portuguese brothers Ricardo and Nuno Matos are the only ones on the list “The 2014 Wallpaper Architects Directory”, which selects the top 20 emerging worldwide architects.
The call from Wallpaper earlier this year was a nice way to start 2014: a prestigious publication Architectural wanted to invite the Office Architects Matos to apply for a place in “The Wallpaper Architects Directory 2014” list, which annually chooses 20 offices architecture emerging around the world. “We presented the portfolio, then did a short interview and yet informed us that we had been selected,” said Nuno Matos.
At that time they didn’t know that they were the only Portuguese’s been selected for the prestigious list, which this year includes 17 countries (United States, United Kingdom and Switzerland each have two premiums) on four continents. The selected papers are presented from the artistic interpretation of Richard Kolker, which led to the exhibition “Future Capital: The 2014 Wallpaper Architects Directory”, that is until 30 June in the gallery Two Pancras Square, King’s Cross, London, integrated at the “London Festival of Architecture”.

Working together since 2001, the brothers decided to create Architects Matos “formally” an office in 2010. “It has to do with the need to respond to the market, making the provision of more professional services. The office has become more credible and is an asset, “said Nuno Matos, 36 years.
In the selection of Wallpaper is highlighted in the House Torrão Lameiro, a private house that sits between Ovar and Torreira near the Ria de Aveiro. “The plan for the House of Torrão Lameiro in Ovar, is generated by existing trees on site, creating a chaotic but exciting angles and concrete forms of composition,” interprets Richard Kolker. It’s like that, confirms Nuno Matos: “Geometry of the house is a result of this deployment of trees and trees between our intervention, a geometry of star that fits this land”.
In the preliminary stage is a job for a residence for homeless people in London, an opportunity that office based in Vila Nova de Gaia managed through the network of contacts that has been built over the years. “There is in London a different policy regarding the homeless. Want to create a residence of support associated with a temporary residence and for students”, explained.
In the next jobs is also to remodel/expansion project of the House Museum Egas Moniz, in Avança near Estarreja, where architects are natural. In addition to other projects of this kind and various private jobs, housing the office is also applied to participate in public tenders and intends to soon launch to competitions outside the country also.
A strategy to escape the Portuguese crisis? “Five years ago it was easier to get jobs. It’s to feel a big breakdown of this crisis, people have more questions before the investment and some jobs were waiting for better times. But we have to win more customers and look for more”.
